Veneers vs. crowns [Sunday, September 05, 2010]

Without a proper evaluation of the teeth it is difficult to recommend veneers over crowns and vice-versa. I can tell that we have had excellent results with porcelain veneers for covering discolorations, fixing chipped or broken teeth, closing spaces, making teeth appear straighter, and other cosmetic concerns. Veneers do not just have to cover the front part of the tooth; they can "wrap" around the tooth if necessary to fill in spaces, add length, or if extra strength is needed. Depending on your bite (occlusion), amount of damage to tooth, periodontal condition, and treatment needed, veneers may not work. You may need crowns or a combination of crowns and veneers.

Cost is another issue. Crowns are generally more expensive than veneers. In my experience, crowns can be approximately $200 more than veneers. My advice is to see us for a complete exam and treatment plan. This plan should include an "ideal" treatment and any other options. we will then give you an estimate of costs. Then you will know what is the best treatment for you and get a better idea of cost.
