Do porcelain veneers chip off or break easily [Sunday, August 29, 2010]

I dont think that veneers "constantly chip off". In fact, veneers can be durable and make a great difference in a patient's appearance. While veneers can be strong, nothing is as strong as your natural tooth structure; therefore, we always remind our patients to slice up apples before they eat them and to try not to tear off hard bread crusts, chew their finger nails, etc. with their new veneers. This caution helps avoid chipping. Your occlusion (bite) can also be a factor in veneer breakage. If your lower teeth come edge-to-edge with your upper teeth, you are more likely to chip the porcelain veneers. To apply veneers, some tooth structure must be removed. Usually about 0.5mm of tooth structure is irreversibly removed. If conditions in your mouth are good, and you take care of your veneers, they may be a fine option for you. We have had some great results and very happy patients.
