Dental Cleanings

After your oral exam, one of our professional hygienists will perform a through dental cleaning by utilizing a technique that is designed to clean your teeth more efficiently. This new method uses less heat and water than alternative methods and provides a more comprehensive cleaning. Treatment times can vary depending on specific needs, but our dental cleanings are

usually completed in about half hour. It is very important that you keep up the good brushing at home to prevent plaque buildup on teeth and potential cavities.

You should at least brush twice a day with a toothpaste and mouthwash which contains fluoride to help prevent cavities.

The dentist uses specialized instruments to gently remove the deposits. The instruments involved in dental cleaning are the following:

Ultrasonic Instrument

This instrument releases tickling vibrations to loosen bigger pieces of tartar and then washes away the debris with a cooling mist of water. You will hear a high pitched whistling or humming sound. It may seem louder than it actually is since the sound may get amplified inside your mouth but it is quite similar to an electric toothbrush.

Fine Hand Tools

Once the bigger pieces of tartar are removed, the dentist will use finer hand tools to remove small deposits and smoothen the tooth surfaces. The smaller tartar deposits are removed using a gentle to moderate pressure.

Polishing

Once all the surfaces are smooth, it is now time to polish your teeth. It is done using a slow speed hand tool with a spinning soft rubber cup at its end. A prophylaxis paste, which has a gritty toothpaste-like texture, is added to the cup and spun around the teeth to polish it.

Fluoride

Fluoride can be used as the final part of the dental cleaning. Most often it comes in foam or gel type and placed over the teeth for 30 seconds. You will be instructed to spit out as much as you can. This helps strengthen the teeth since the acids from the bacteria in the tartar and plaque will have weakened its surfaces. We recommend that you do not eat, drink or rinse your mouth for 30 minutes after the fluoride application.
